Architecture

The Department offers a pre-professional Bachelor of Architectural Science degree, with options in Architecture, Building Science, and Project Management, the goal of which is to educate students for a wide range of professional roles in the construction industry.

Ryerson’s professional program in architecture comprises a four-year B.Arch.Sci. degree plus the two-year M.Arch. degree.

This program received full accreditation by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board (CACB) in 2010. The Department is located in a Ron Thom-designed facility on the Ryerson campus in the heart of downtown Toronto and was founded in 1948.

We boast a multidisciplinary faculty carrying out a broad array of research, scholarly and creative projects, exciting exhibitions, guest lectures, symposia, and other events throughout the year.

Admissions

Applications are considered on a continual basis as soon as complete applications are received. Incomplete applications will NOT be processed until all documents are received. Minimum Academic Requirement

  • Completed a B.Arch.Sci. degree (or equivalent), with a minimum grade point average (GPA) or equivalent of 3.00/4.33 (B)
  • Achieved a minimum of 3.00/4.33 (B) in the last two years of study Possession of the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance. Preference will be given to applicants with the best qualifications.

The Master’s Program in Architecture offers preparation for entry into the profession of architecture to students admitted with an undergraduate degree in architectural science (BArch. Sci.) or its equivalent.

You must hold an undergraduate degree in architecture that is part of an accredited professional program (CACB or equivalent).

College programs and degrees that are not part of a professionally accredited architecture program are normally considered insufficient preparation for the program.

Program Specific Document: In addition to the general requirements for admission to the Graduate School at Ryerson, the Masters in Architecture program requires the following materials:

Portfolio

The Portfolio is a collection of your work that demonstrates your high level of competence in all aspects of architectural design and representation.

It is probably the most important single piece of documentation that you will submit in this application and should receive significant attention both in terms of content and design. It should include both works done at school and as a professional.

Format

  1. The portfolio must be presented in a bound document, letter (8 ½ x 11) or A4 size. Pay attention to the design of the document.
  2. The portfolio must include the following information on the front cover:

  1. The words “Master of Architecture Portfolio”
  2. Your name
  3. Your mailing address, telephone number, email address, and other contact information
  4. Page two of the portfolio must be the completed Statement of Authorship.
  5. The portfolio may include up to thirty additional pages (printed on one side) or fifteen additional pages printed on both sides. The portfolio may include images of creative work in any media. Please note that the portfolios will not be returned. Digital media such as CDs and DVDs will not normally be reviewed; if your work is heavily video-based, please contact the Program Director prior to submitting your application.
  6. Remember, graphic design and package design do matter
  7. All work must be clearly labeled. Identify the name/title of the work or project, the medium, and date of work, and provide any other information regarding the work submitted. If work was produced in a professional context, identify your specific role or roles on the project.
  8. Any materials not included in the bond portfolio will be discarded. Do not submit original models, furniture, sculpture, etc.

The Portfolio must be submitted in hard copy to the Graduate Admissions office in-person (1 Dundas Street West, 11th floor), by mail, or courier (350 Victoria Street, Toronto, ON, M5B 2K3). Please write "architecture" on the envelope. All other admission materials must be uploaded to the Graduate Admissions program site. About the Admission Materials

Letters of Recommendation

A minimum of two Letters of Recommendation is required for each application.

Reference letters are a key component of your application package and close attention must be paid prior to selecting a referee. It is also your responsibility to contact the referee before filling out the online application form to confirm their availability.

Your referees should have the ability to comment on your past achievements and your potential as a graduate student. In most cases, the referees will be former professors or research supervisors familiar with your abilities. If you have been out of school for a significant period of time, a letter from an employer may be more appropriate.

Statement of Intent

You are required to submit a brief written statement of about 500 words outlining your research interests within the discipline of architecture. Your statement should relate to one or more of the Research Areas of the program.

What is the role of the architectural profession in the coming decades? As the program will use this statement to determine the availability of an appropriate Supervisor, you should try to be as precise as possible. To review a listing of all required documents, please refer to the Material Checklist.

Admission Requirements:

Academic Requirements

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent (see Alternative/Equivalent Standing below) with a minimum of six Grade 12 U or M courses including the following program specific requirements.  Typically, a minimum overall average of 70% establishes eligibility for admission consideration; subject to competition individual programs may require higher pre-requisite grades and/or higher overall averages:

  • English/Anglais (ENG4U/EAE4U preferred)
  • Physics (SPH4U)
  • Mathematics [one of: Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U) or Advanced Functions (MHF4U)]
  • The minimum grade(s) required in the subject prerequisites (normally in the 65-70% range) will be determined subject to competition.

Non-Academic Requirements

Applicants educated outside of Ontario must submit evidence of education equivalent to the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six Grade 12 U or M courses. Ryerson reserves the right to be the final arbiter of what will be accepted on an equivalency basis. It is essential that program-specific subject requirements and grades for specific Ryerson programs form part of the academic background of applicants from outside Ontario, especially in the last two years of secondary school studies.

  • The number of applications we receive greatly exceeds the number of spaces available in each program and the possession of the minimum requirements in no way guarantees acceptance. Due to competition candidates may be required to present average/grades above the minimum.
  • Alternate/equivalent standing outlined below represent the minimum qualifications for admission consideration and are subject to change. (Adapted from the University of Ryerson)
